Soap.

Last night I made homemade laundry soap (#10) for the first time. It was a mixture of castille soap, baking soda, washing soda and vinegar. The castille soap addition kind of pushed it over the cost-effective edge.

I should try one with Borax, although I'm a little scared of Borax as it's rather toxic. The other option is to make a detergent using grated bar soap. Mike is suspicious of the dissolving effectiveness, but I might give it a try.

  1. Let us know how it works! I have some castile soap, so I could try this when I run out. It only requires 1/4 cup, so it sounds like it would be much cheaper in the long run.

Oh, how I wish I could send my greywater to the garden...

  2. I will! I thought it would be cheaper in the long run too until I started making it and realized one batch only made about 8 loads worth of soap. yikes! Castille soap ain't cheap. The other ones though, should lower costs significantly.
